Ms

Shuchi Agrawal tackled the subject of Ayurveda in a manner that allowed me to understand a subject that I have long misunderstood. So much valuable information and tasty recipes in a perfectly held package. Health, Taste and Traditions is a great book and I highly recommend it.

It is another first for me — reviewing a cookbook with hundreds of mouth-watering, sumptuous Indian vegetarian food items. I will leave the cooking part for readers to try, and relish the various recipes, and concentrate here only on health aspects. Yet again, it is not only a recipe book but a well-researched manuscript on our ancient Bharatiya medical system of Ayurveda and its significance to the humankind. The first few chapters inform us about our body constitution and how balancing the 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘴 of 𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘵, and 𝘬𝘢𝘱𝘩 is important to lead a healthy life. They also mention about Ayurvedic version of balance diet, involving the three essentials of taste, source, and quantity. The author, being a professional nutritionist, takes due care in giving right authentic information by attesting Vedic sources through Sanskrit hymns. She gets into the minute details of how, when and in what proportion each vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices should be consumed, according to the season, climate, and weather conditions. Ms Agrawal recommends to go for local organic foods, a must for Ayurvedic lifestyle, rather than for exotic hybrid foreign ones. The book devotes a separate chapter for healthy, simple, and best diabetic food — and it is very much mentioned in our Ayurvedic scriptures. The author takes every opportunity to prove how Ayurvedic items, which we use in our day-to-day cooking in our kitchen, have more medicinal quality inherent in its natural form and how to make good use of it in a traditional and tasty way. What I like about the author's approach is she gives the basic outline of tradional way of cooking and then indulges with her list of healthy and aromatic dishes, ranging from basic masala preparations to flavourful fat-rich, ghee-laden mithais. This information-heavy book, peppered with colourful laminated photos, is all about food and health that one must know about, especially we Bharathiyas, as Ayurveda has been part of our DNA from time immemorial, but neglected due to modern science and medical advancement. I highly recommend this book if you are health conscious and a foodie looking for desi vegetarian dishes.
